Heavy Flowers – Blaudzun

An album with a gypsy feel, Dutch artist Blaudzun has an amazing voice that runs from melancholy to hope. The songs had plenty of momentum to keep me pedalling through the Netherlands. Fav track – We Both Know.

Thanks to Koen and Sabine for the recommendation!

Riding the Vennbahn

IMG_20150414_152657779_HDRThe 125km Vennbahn, or Fen-Rail, is a cycle path that follows the trail of a long since closed railway line. It runs from Aachen in Germany, through German-speaking Belgium to Troisvierges in Luxemburg. We spent two days cruising along its gently swooping curves and sloping gradients, partly pretending to be trains but mostly admiring beautiful countryside, villages and woodland. Read More

Peak blubber

One thing I have learned in the first week of our journey is that pretty much anyone can be a cycle tourist.

I’ve heard the likes of cycle touring blogger Tom Allen say you don’t have to be fit to do a tour, but I never really believed him.

My experience of cycling so far has been as a commuter where no training is required and as a sportive rider.  When preparing for sportive events you need to train for endurance, stamina and speed (if you are a show-off) and I’ve also learned nutrition is important to last an eight hour day in the saddle.

HAYWAY podcast episode 2

In breaking news this hour…we are actually doing this cycle trip thing. We left from London on April 4th and recorded the second episode of our podcast soon after we boarded the ferry at Harwich bound for the Netherlands.

As always your tips and feedback are welcome.

Say goodbye

A huge thank you to everyone who came to our farewell last night. We gathered a bunch of our London friends together at Shillibeer’s Bar & Grill in North London to catch up and say goodbye.

We asked people to give us one piece of advice and here are some of their pearls of wisdom:

  • Enjoy every moment
  • Don’t drink and ride
  • Remember to wash your hands
  • Deep breaths and count to 69
  • There’s always the option of turning it inside out
  • You’re in this together
  • As soon as you learn, move on
  • Just think of a giant bear hug every time you’re about to cry, scream or throttle each other
  • Talk to everyone, take their advice and enjoy the ride
  • How you climb a mountain is more important than reaching the top

We also asked for one song from each person to make a playlist – it has turned out to be an eclectic collection, enjoy!

Apologies to Miranda, Sejal, Penny, Mike and Saphia for not being able to get your tracks on Spotify. I have added a different song by same artist where poss.
