HAYWAY podcast episode 11 – Peniche

Sun, sand and sardines in the 11th episode of the How Are You? Where Are You? podcast recorded in Peniche on the western tip of Portugal. After riding down the Atlantic coast from Porto, we discuss our small diversion in-land to the historic university of Coimbra and take you out on the town for a sardine dinner.

Clockwise from top: View of Peniche harbour. Terry the Hilleberg Nallo 3GT tent. Grilled sardines. Lipton cocktail drinks (no alcohol). What's in the Pot ingredients.

Art of travel

Martin rides ahead of Baden

There are lots of times this style of travel is everything you dream it might be…liberating, challenging, flexible and the best way to spend time with local people. Then you meet someone who seems to embody the spirit of it in a way that makes your trip feel super organised and almost clinical.

Puzzle – Barcella

When I listened to this album I felt like I was in a French cafe that had just been inundated by circus folk. There are a few quieter pop tunes but it is also pretty hectic in places. I enjoyed the raucous instrumentation and collaborative vocals but this is not music made for cycling in the peaceful countryside. Fav track – Sur la route.

Cheerful and energetic, like our friend Florence who recommended it!

Music = making it to the top

IMG_20150516_110113836We crossed The Pyrenees and climbed 2,600m in two days, and that wasn’t the end of it. We also climbed to the Cruz de Ferro and there will be so much more!

Heavy Flowers – Blaudzun

An album with a gypsy feel, Dutch artist Blaudzun has an amazing voice that runs from melancholy to hope. The songs had plenty of momentum to keep me pedalling through the Netherlands. Fav track – We Both Know.

Thanks to Koen and Sabine for the recommendation!

Riding the Vennbahn

IMG_20150414_152657779_HDRThe 125km Vennbahn, or Fen-Rail, is a cycle path that follows the trail of a long since closed railway line. It runs from Aachen in Germany, through German-speaking Belgium to Troisvierges in Luxemburg. We spent two days cruising along its gently swooping curves and sloping gradients, partly pretending to be trains but mostly admiring beautiful countryside, villages and woodland. Read More
