We’re Famous in the Hutt Valley

Cycle touring in New Zealand

If you have a letterbox in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, you’ll find a copy of the Upper Hutt Leader inside on Wednesday (NZ Time).

The front page should feature a couple of grubby cycle tourists who arrived home over the weekend.

For those of you who don’t live in Upper Hutt then please move here. We need more friends. Before you pack your worldly possessions and set sail for the green grass of the valley, you can read the story online here.

It’s been great being home and we have ridden our bikes every day so far. We just can’t shake this bug yet. Riding our bikes just feels normal.

Our homecoming podcast should be online later this week or early next. There will probably be one more podcast where we review our trip, some of our gear and muse on our future plans.

We also want to provide the cycle touring community with a decent gear review portal so keep coming back and hopefully we will have extensive reviews of how our kit list stacked up after 13 months on the road.

  1. Excellent surprise in my letter box this morning with the Upper Hutt Leader, as you mention above!
Listening to your podcast explaining your new career move at the moment – not sure if you are pulling our legs or not, I think you maybe you are?

Look forward to your arriving home podcast and the following review podcast.

Keep an eye out for a big guy on a big yellow bike – I need to get you into my album:

Was it in this podcast or somewhere else I read/heard you want to do the Rimutaka Cycle Trail sometime soon? Thanks for motivating me to upload the last 1/2 dozen photos to my album of this ride I did in March: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nztony/albums/72157666475540911

    • Hi Tony, love the pics! It would be an honour to feature in your album, what a great idea to put it together. Hopefully we do run into each other out on the trails somewhere. Not literally of course. I think we might hit the Rimutakas on Monday in fact and your pictures have got me quite excited. Who knew all this beautiful scenery was here right on my home turf!!!

      Cheers for the message 🙂

  2. Hello Baden & Shelley

We’d love to meet you if you’re ever in Greytown! Ann & I have toured a bit on our tandem in Asia & elsewhere, and last year I went from Trondheim (Norway) to Milan.

I’ve been carefully examining your bikes in the Leader photo on line. Shelley’s is a Surly, and by counting cables on Baden’s I surmise that he has a Rohloff hub – correct?

    Best wishes

    John

    • Hi John, thanks for the message. We’d love to meet you both. Baden’s mum lives in Carterton so we are over the hill fairly often. We’ll have to arrange to drop in. I’ll take a look at your blog in the meantime and maybe flick you an email so we can grab your mobile number.

Baden doesn’t have a Rohloff actually. We both have the same:
Rear Hubs – Hope Pro 2 Evo
Front Hubs – Schmidt SON 28 6-bolt disc

More details on the gear list page 😉
